LIVERPOOL – Since retiring as a professional player in 2016, Steven Gerrard has immediately rushed to start his career as a football coach.

In February 2017, he became Liverpool’s junior coach. In July of the same year he became coach of Liverpool U-18s and 1 September was appointed coach of Liverpool FC YL.

Already starting at the junior level, Gerrard immediately tried his luck to become a main coach outside England. On 1 June 2018, the former Reds captain was entrusted as coach of Scottish club Glasgow Rangers.

He led Rangers to 192 games in all competitions. In the Scottish premier league, he led Rangers to 76 wins, 21 draws and 10 defeats. He presented a Scottish League title without defeat last season.

Now, his work is eagerly awaited in the Premier League. Aston Villa have officially announced Gerrard as the new coach to replace the sacked Dean Smith. He had to end his partnership with Rangers early because in his initial contract he had a tenure until May 2024.

Villa were not satisfied with Smith’s performance in recent weeks even though he led the team well at the start of the season. They swallowed five consecutive defeats in the Premier League so that their fate could not be helped.

Gerrard is expected along with some of his staff at Rangers to be brought toAston Villa include Michael Beale, Garry McAllister, Tom Culshaw and Jordan Milson.

“The Aston Villa board are delighted to appoint Steven (Gerrard) as our new head coach,” Aston Villa CEO Christian Purslow said at the announcement.

Purslow is interested in Gerrard’s journey as a coach after retiring as a player. Starting out at a young age in Liverpool’s academy is an extraordinary value that the club board highly values.

He said Gerrard’s decision to coach Rangers was a brave decision for me to test his ability to coach a first team that plays in the highest tier of Scottish football.

The club’s board saw he was able to overcome the pressure with Rangers by presenting the Scottish Premiership title. It really caught the attention of the high board of Aston Villa.

“It was very clear in our discussions with him that Steven’s ambitions, philosophy and coaching values are a complete match for Aston Villa,” he asserted.

Gerrard said Aston Villa is a club with a rich history and tradition in English football. Therefore, he is proud to be their new coach.

He claims in conversations with club officials they have ambitious ambitions and he hopes to fulfill their ambitions.

“I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone associated with Glasgow Rangers for giving me the opportunity to manage such an iconic football club.”

“Helping them secure a record-breaking 55th league title will always have a special place in my heart. I wish the best for the players, staff and supporters in the future,” said Gerrard.

The question now is can Gerrard repeat the success in the Premier League as he did in Scotland? The reason is, the Premier League is the toughest competition in the world filled with top coaches.

In the world of coaching, it is undeniable that Gerrard is an onion. He had to collide tactics with Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel, Antonio Conte, Rafael Benitez, Brendan Rodgers, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Claudio Ranieri. These names are class A coaches with extraordinary experience and achievements.
